What is Mollichaff Light Molasses Free and what benefits does it offer?

Mollichaff Light Molasses Free is high in fibre, while being low in starch and sugar. This highly palatable, cost-effective, dust-free chaff contains straw, fibre pellets and grass that is dressed with soya oil. This chaff can be fed as a partial forage replacer or to complement your hard feed or balancer.

Mollichaff Light Molasses Free is a versatile chaff suitable for horses and ponies that need a calorie-controlled diet.

Why is Fibre fed to horses?

Feeding inadequate amounts of fibre and/or too much sugar and starch can cause digestive disturbances, disrupting the delicate balance of the gut microbiome (micro-organisms in the gut) and affecting gut motility. Often, horses and ponies with endocrine and metabolic issues have restricted grazing. Therefore, it is important to supplement the diet with a low calorie, high fibre forage.

Why is oil fed to horses?

Oil is a rich source of important fatty acids (including omega 3 and 6 fatty acids). It is recognised widely for promoting healthy skin and a glossy coat. In addition, oil is an excellent alternative energy source to cereals, for horses who require a diet low in starch and sugar.

What type of horse is Mollichaff Light Molasses Free suitable for?

As we discussed earlier in this article, Mollichaff Light Molasses Free is high in fibre, and low in starch and sugar. Therefore, it is suitable for many horse types depending on their condition, lifestyle, and workload.

Mollichaff Light Molasses Free chaff is suitable for good doers and those that have endocrine and metabolic issues that could lead to laminitis.  Mollichaff Light Molasses Free is formulated to mix with a balancer or hard feed, or may be fed alone with a powdered mineral and vitamin supplement to meet micronutrient requirements.

This versatile chaff can be used as a partial forage replacer or as a low-calorie enrichment activity, increasing foraging behaviour and chewing time for horses and ponies with limited access to pasture due to grass growth or turn out time – for example, popping small amounts of Mollichaff Light Molasses Free in buckets around a track grazing system.

To support gastric health

To help keep the horse’s digestive system and microbiome in a healthy balance, we must feed horses little and often; this will improve gut motility and reduce digestive upset.

Did you know…?

Feeding a double handful of chaff a short period before exercise can help protect the horse’s stomach from splashback, a term coined to describe acid damaging the upper (squamous) part of the stomach without a protective mucus lining.
