Alfalfa (lucerne) is a legume and is a rich source of
highly digestible fibre. When fed in its pure form,
alfalfa will provide equivalent energy levels to that
of a cool mix or similar, yielding approximately 10MJ/Kg.
And, because this energy is derived from fibre, alfalfa
will not cause the ‘fizziness’ that is associated
with grains.
Alfalfa is suitable to feed to laminitics and ‘good
doers’, as it contains a sugar level that is considerably
lower than grass. Products which combine alfalfa with
straw will provide a lower energy content than pure
alfalfa and are excellent for these types of horses.
